I tried the 40 bead challenge once and want to do it again with new colors. Would someone please explain the use of a full rod as opposed to stringers for making the dots. I could not find the info on Heather Trimlett's site or instructions.
I think it is just to have you practice the control. It wasn't hard once I got used to it.

I would think that learning to make small dots with rods would be a strong lesson in heat control, how much is enough, how long to wait while it cools, how to get just a small foot print to attach properly to the bead and how to pull off the excess when you get more than you want.
I see as developing something like "muscle memory" when applying dots with rod versus stringer.
Here is the original outline to do the 40 bead challenge. http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5526e584e4b068dde705d75c/t/55d34880e4b0d06bf5f356ad/1439910016573/HT-40-beads-1-0-5-2012.pdf It says nothing about using full rods vs. stringer for the dots. I believe that was a decision that was made by the person making the beads when Haley had a group (including me :) ) do the challenge together.
I'll see if I can find the link. That said, I think using the full rod is a lesson in heat control as mentioned above. Plus for those of us that have little stringer control ( like me lol ! )using a full rod is just easier or at least once you get use to it as Eileen says.
ETA: Found the link ! http://lampworketc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=254228&highlight=bead+challenge
If I remember correctly questions came up during the whole process about different things like do we use a full rod vs. stringer, etc. It was fun and I wouldn't mind doing it again myself when I get back to the torch.

Thanks for the info. I was not sure if it was meant to add depth to the challenge or was a specific rule. I may wind up doing it both ways, one set with stringers and one with full rods. Starting again soon. This is how newbies get better-right?
One of the best practice methods out there in my opinion. Great for newbs and not so newbs too as it can take one back to basics. Some of us need that or at least should give it a go again. Back to basics that is. If one is in a "funk" this is a great way to get back on track.
