And i work for a company that fabs borosilicate glass of all kinds
from clear to tinted glass and we even work with sungate and solar ban glass can i use
glass from my job and if so are there types to avoid?

Nothing coated what so ever!

Before you latch on to baseless blanket statements, check with the engineers at your company to get their take on whether or not the stuff's safe to put into the flame.

"Nothing coated what so ever"

Honestly, what do you think dichro is?

Welcome, have fun...

Back to your question, a lot of the "what do I need" eventually boils down to what you want to make. But the basics:

Propane/oxygen torch
Ventilation
Appropriate glasses (I say shade 3 or better, others will swear that didymium lenses are more than enough)
A safe work surface

Tweezers
Marver
Gravity

Enjoy!

I think dicro and regular window tint would be a good bit different.

"glass of all kinds
from clear to tinted glass and we even work with sungate and solar ban glass"

Would you really sacrifice your health or someone elses by risking unknowns? To me its a safe call to drop a blanket statement as such, until to OP can do some research. Safety is always #1, especially in a field like this.

And welcome to LE, tons of available help and a wealth of knowledge. My bad for not welcoming you sooner. I was kinda busy at the time and I know how impatient with things I can be, even more so when jumping into something new, and didn't want you jumping the gun and collapsing a lung or something lol

Doh...it's like going to the grocery store, I always forget something :)

Dark13 2013-11-10 8:38am

Yea im certain that any of the mirrored or treated glass (like solar ban) would be a bad idea the melt some of that stuff is easy to ruin anyway but we do get stuff like starfire and atlantica glass that im wanting to fab into counter top covers and jewely maybe if i get good enough i may do scuptures

But side question can someone explain the annealing because i was under the impression that annealed is raw glass also is there ways to safely cool my creations down without a kiln?

Dark13 2013-11-10 9:38am

So with safety glasses can i use welding goggles or are those different?

Yes, and make sure you get one that reaches a high enough temperature to fuse glass if you're planning to use the kiln for fusing. Welcome!

Get a copy of "Contemporary Lampworking" by Bandhu Dunham. An excellent text.

You can but not alone and its a hassle. Wale apparatus sells boro spec glasses for $60 a pair, great investment btw.

I kiln is gunna be needed no matter what. You anneal to release stress in the glass by realigning the molecules into a much more stable structural chain. Without annealing, you creation can self destruct and implode at anytime for any reason due to uneven stresses and pressures within the glass. Kilns can be found on Craigslist, these forums, Facebook or you could build a small cheapo for $1-200

Everything i've read says that your temps have to get too high to make fusing boro efficient or worthwhile. On the other hand, I haven't read all there is to read.

menty666 2013-11-17 1:24pm

Boro can be fused, but there are risks of devit when it cools if it's not done to some particular finicky schedule.
