Any Creative Ideas for a Memorable Project?

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on a project I can make using the glass from a car windshield. I want to make something out of the glass used in my first car and keep it as a memory. I don't know what is possible and what is not.

Can it be cut? Can it be bent? Can it me melted?

I know it's laminated but I've heard that it's separatable.

I was thinking of making a drinking cup out of it. Possible? I don't really like the idea of drinking cup but I think it is the most simple design. Cylinder and handle and circle.

Any better ideas that someone with not a lot of skill can pull off? If any of this is even possible.

Thanks,

Ardy

Do you mean to melt in a flame? I don't know if you can separate it or not.

If you mean for any project, you could use a side window if you had access, as part of a mosaic. You can tap it so it crazes, and use the chunks or the tiny pieces if you wanted to take it all apart, as part of the mosaic. You can find samples online.

A windshield now is laminated poly-vinyl butyral & tempered glass. I'm not sure it would be safe to melt - depends on age etc. of vehicle. You might find info from a glass or auto recycling firm.

I'm w/Eileen - much safer to try mosaic process.

I would suggest going with something that you glue the windshield glass to rather than trying to melt the glass.

Besides the sandwich with the poly-vinyl butyral in it not behaving predictably in the torch, the outer layers of glass will have an unknown coe.
Even if you do manage to get the windshield glass to melt into another glass the odds are that it will eventually crack / break / shatter due to the stress of the different coe of the glass materials.

I think a pendant would be best.

Maybe make a back layer of transparent glass in the shape you want then glue the windshield fragments to surface of that and wrap the edge in a bezel of some sort with a loop to fit a necklace through.

Make a glass mosaic candle vase. I've seen them on Pinterest. Super pretty.

Hi there,
I recently had a custom order to create the same idea. What I did was blow a clear hollow bead on a 5/32 mandrel double dipped.
After it was cleaned, I then epoxyed a bead cap on the bottom, dried it, filled it with the tiny bits of windshield and epoxyed a bail and bead cap on the top. Then I did some fancy wiring to make it hangable, on a tree or in a window. Photo attached. It looks very beautiful in the light too.
Client was thrilled.
I hope my idea sharing helps!
Cheers

That's really quite stunning.

Nice work.
