Degenerate art

Degenerate art the amazing documenty on glass pipes by marble slinger
is now showing on XFINITY pay per view
catch it if you can

Baywinger 2012-07-12 6:10pm

Ok I don't care what your feelings are about pipes you have to see this film

allicat 2012-07-12 6:47pm

Think the issue is pay-per-view, not the pipes!

PittsGlass 2012-07-12 6:58pm

I'd pay to see it. I am not on that service, guess I'll be waiting for a closer venue or the Netflix debut they have planned later on. I have heard good things about the film. I want to see if it is doing their industry a service. I know lots of people who make pipes but don't use them. I'd like to see the reputation of the industry reflect the business people, not so much the same argument on legality. I'll be in the audience sooner or later.

Just wactched a second time with my DW good thing I did missed a number of pieces the first time through,

Degenerate Art is live now digitally for rental and purchase though most cable networks (ondemand, comcast/xfinity, time-warner, cox, charter) as well as Itunes, Playstation, Xbox, and Zune....

The film is very well done and focuses on the development of the artistic movement starting with interviews of early pioneers and moving on to the new generation that is pushing the envelope. They do cover the DEA operation that destroyed the businesses of several successful blowing shops but the coverage is focused on the impact to the individual owners and the many lampworkers that were suddenly out of a job. It also highlights the tension that exists between the those that believe that somehow items that have a function are a lesser form of, or do not qualify as, art. Amazing how that bias cuts across all artistic media.

EVERYONE should see this. it's fantastic.

istandalone24/7 2012-07-16 3:07pm

does anyone know if this is going to be released on dvd?

Signguy 2012-07-16 4:03pm

DVD is to be released next month.

I rented it on iTunes.

Really, really enjoyed it. Was awed by the talent and art.

It was a great insight into "the other side" for someone who loves boro but has never been into pipes or the culture surrounding them.

I hope that this is one big step toward recognition of this work as an art form of its own.

great news!!

Cornbread 2012-07-17 6:53am

i bought it on itunes. soooo worth the 15 bucks!!! def a must see!! pipe maker/despiser...it doesn't matter, it's about ART and the growth of our industry.

ABR Dave 2012-07-17 8:04am

i love the points made about how much freedom to explore and innovate the pipe industry has given the raw glass manufacturers. it's something all boro glassworkers (sculpters, beadmakers, pipers, anyone really) should be thankful for. it's not debatable, the color charts we enjoy these days are a result of the pipe industry. the demand for color, created the profits for the Northstar, GA, TAG, etc....to really dive into new territory.

it is full of information. an amazing watch. its a really interesting community of people and hearing some personal accounts of the movement is really really interesting.

I agree with everyone. Killer flick, amazing art. I paused it so many times it took me three hours to watch it the first time.

I got to see it on a big screen last fall, really fabulous. Ironically, I had *just* seen "Exit Through the Giftshop" about the street art and Banksy, and I think the two films work well together. Giftshop is more focused on the art versus marketing issue, and the Degenerate Art film has a broader focus, but they both ask us to decide what makes something ART and what makes it a cool craft or a piece of merchandise? Giftshop is already available on Netflix, FWIW, happy to see Degenerate will join it.

Wife and I just enjoyed it on Time Warner Cable's Movies on Demand channel under the Indie section. Wonderful movie chock full of the things you would WANT to know about.

chrisann 2012-07-22 7:28pm
