Problems with devitrification using mini torch.
 

Hello everyone! I seem to keep having problems with devitrification when I am making my bails for my boro pendants. When I make the bail and attach it and attempt to melt it in with my mini torch I always seem to get surface devitrification and scuzz from doing so. Am I using too much oxygen when doing so? I have used plenty of oxygen with my mini torch previous times when doing so and have never had this problem until now. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks for reading!

I don't do boro but I had always thought that (with the exception of Evil Devitrifying Purple) too much heating can lead to devit.

Perhaps you are heating it too fast? Just a guess.

You have a picture? Sometimes what looks like devit can just be stretch marks from the outer glass cooling while the inside is moving and you are stretching or pulling. Some colors scuzz from too much oxy.

Do you use lighter “crayon” colors for a bail? Try sticking to clear or darker colors like cobalt. And get some “Handy Andy’s” to make your bails quicker. Sounds like you are overworking the glass.

Tweezer at a flea market for $1 and bend the ends in.

You could do that but Handy Andy’s have tungsten pins that stand up to heat. And you can use the straight pick on them to shape the hole. Best tool after tungsten tweezers, IMO.
