Bluff Rd. Color Archive tut?

Okay, first let me say that I've purchased Kim's tutorials in the past and they have been excellent. That being said I would appreciate it if someone who has purchased the tutorial would email (lillybellebeads@live.com) me the pros and cons. I guess I'm wondering if the glass in the tut is common or easily available and if others found it helpful. I would hate to spend $60 and the tutorial not to be useful to me.

Lisa, the archive is not a tut. It is bead porn. LOL

From Kim's description:
is a complete color reference on my most popular lampwork designs of the past decade. Featuring 152 pages and 172 bead designs, with over 200 full color photographs, the Color Archive is not a how-to or a step-by-step tutorial, but rather, an elegantly presented "cookbook" of glass recipes — an invaluable reference compiling for the first time the complete details on exactly which colors and brands of glass were used to create my best-selling and most talked-about bead designs. This full-color e-book in PDF format contains thorough indexes by manufacturer/glass color and also by bead name, which will allow you to quickly find inspiring examples of what you can do with a given color, or look up the color recipes for your favorite designs. Also included are working tips on my favorite glasses, technical notes for some of the more difficult designs, and a compilation of helpful color-related resources. Whether you're looking for inspiration to wake up your muse and tips on how to combine colors for maximum impact, or you just love bead-related eye candy, this gorgeous, lovingly prepared reference is a must-have for the lampworker who is serious about color.

I can't wait to save up for mine. I would totally be using it for inspiration.

I have Kim's Color Archive. Man oh man. Just to scroll through the photos is enough to give me hot flashes. Anyway - to answer your question(s) - most of the glass used is fairly mainstream such as opal yellow, silver plum, aurae, triton, and of course raku. Fair amount of reduction frit. Kim gives suggestions for substitutions for glass that is hard to find, or impossible to find. Each photo contains a list of the glass used. It really is a book of ideas and info. She writes about Inspiration and limiting your glass selection which is the part I love. Highly recommended.

I'm on a hothead and would recommend this "tut" highly. I think of tuts as more like a class from a distance - the .pdf being a compilation of the lampworker's knowledge - in this case over quite a period of time. If there is glass I don't have or some techniques that are not perfect on a hothead, all the reason to aim for a substitute and take things in a slightly different direction. If you have to wait, put this one at the top of your list! I didn't consider not purchasing the tut though I've never been fortunate enough to win any of Kim's beads in an auction. Worth every penny!

I love this archive, and am very glad I purchased it. That said, there are a few colors in there that are no longer readily available: Z-99, original Terra, a bit of ASK, maybe a few others. But there is plenty in there that is still in production.

Everything in there is very inspirational, and I think of it as less a recipe and more as a jumping off point for my imagination. [But damn I wish I had know about the Z99 in time to get some!]

PattyK 2010-12-31 2:30pm

I am thrilled with it! Kim has included every type of design; from relatively simple to quite complex - all of them highly inspirational. Also included are some terrific notes on working with different types/colors of glass as well as substitutions for colors that are no longer being made.

I recently purchased Kim's Color Archive..Great photo's and explanations. The colors used are already in my glass stash, so I have found the archive very useful. I found several of the color combinations illustrated to be very useful. The tips and tricks will be invaluable, as they are all right there on a page or two. I felt even if I picked up one useful combination or technique it would be worth the money. I have discovered several. Thumbs up to Kim and her beautiful work! Jilly

I totally agree with Vicki that it is worth every penny. This color archive is for beginners and experienced lampworkers alike because Kim doesn't give instructions on how to make her beads, but rather lists the glass she used for each set. Depending on your own personal style you can use the color information in your own way. Don't buy it expecting step by step instructions because it isn't that kind of publication. It's just what Debbie said it is...bead porn. And it will make your eyes pop out more than Johnny Depp without his shirt on. :)

I can tell you how many times I've seen one of Kim's sets and wondered "what did she use to get that effect". Now I know.

At the end of the archive Kim also includes some helpful tips that are worth the price of the e-book. You won't be disappointed.

What Diane just said! There are no cons. I love it!!

Lisa, dont worry about the tutorial, it is one piece of art! It has 152 pages full of images of gorgeous beads with the explanation of the colors and glasses used. It is amazing tutorial and I think it is one heck of a deal considering that she is spilling out the beans of all those beads we have just been admiring from the distance for so long. Go ahead and purchase yours, you wont be sorry. I was pretty convinced already to buy one from the presale, and boy am I glad I did! This tutorial will give you ideas, inspiration and help you to achieve color combinations you didnt even think of. And it will be yours to keep forever. You wont be done with it after trying something once, but years and years to inspire you all over again with different things.
It is not a tutorial in sense that she would go through every single bead with the techniques and the tiniest detail how to rake and poke and manipulate the glass, but in my mind there is no need for that. How ever in the end there are technical notes she does explain in detail how to work with certain reactive glasses, and what might work as a substitute. And as a cherry on a top there is a list of websites to find inspiration from.
I hope this was enough of help. And so sorry Kim if I revealed too much, but I think it is well worth the 2 thumbs up... and big toes too!

Absolutely lovin mine!!

kgarner 2010-12-31 2:41pm

This remarkable body of work is a beautiful showcase of talent. She generously exposes what glasses are used to create each bead/set, right down to which encasement glass was used. Tutorial - no. Inspirational - definitely.
Sometimes when I sit down to play, I'm overwhelmed by all the pattern, color, shape, techique choices available. I can easily see myself using this resource as a jump off point to give me direction in my glass travels.

loribeads 2010-12-31 2:43pm

This Color Archive is FULL of information. Worth it? Oh my gosh, yes. It gives 10 years worth of color usage information. You get the recipe for each bead set, a gorgeous picture of the set so you can see the recipe in action. You get a feel for what's possible, really. I had tons of 'I have GOT to try that combo' moments. It's also full of inspiration. The pictures are incredible. The beads are pure art. The technical notes in the back are icing on the cake, yet worth their weight in gold.

Mustang Dawn 2010-12-31 2:47pm

I love mine and would purchase it all over again if I had too :) Nope, not one regret! There are years of inspiration here with all the color recipes. Kim also has great "how too" working notes in the back for certain colors.

IMHO Kim rocked this out!

Holly'sFolly 2010-12-31 2:48pm

It's simply wonderful. I've gotten all kinds of ideas for not only the color combos Kim uses but for variations I want to try. I've always felt color was my greatest weakness and by studying what works for Kim, I'm on my way to improving my own choices!

barbaracollins 2010-12-31 2:48pm

I absolutely love it! I sit and stare at the pictures on my iPad! Thanks Kim.

Holly'sFolly 2010-12-31 2:49pm

Oh and I think Kim says of all the glasses used on the original terra is no longer made so it's not chocked full of extinct glass!

Irina 2010-12-31 2:49pm

I`ve purchased this tutorial about a week ago and I`m quite happy - so much information to learn. Yes, there are no step by step instructions, but there is so much information about the types of glass used in all Kim`s wonderful designs - and what else we need for inspiration?
Here is a necklace I`ve made inspired by this amaing tutorial - THANK YOU, KIM!!!

I gifted the Color Archives to myself for Christmas and it's worth every penny and then some! I've looked over the whole thing, drooling over set after set of gorgeous beads and felt such inspiration wash over me. I haven't had much time to torch since receiving it, but I'm sure it will be an awesome source of inspiration once I get back to the torch! There's so many great color combos to play with I don't know where to start! Kim, thank you so much for all your hard work in compiling this huge cookbook of glass recipes!

LisaAF 2010-12-31 2:50pm

Thanks to all! Diane, I don't know, I find Mr. Depp exquisite even with his shirt on.

jamie lynne 2010-12-31 2:53pm

I got it made into a hard cover book. That way I can tote it with me everywhere.

jknappcampbell 2010-12-31 2:54pm

I love it! The Color Archives has given me a boost- nearly all of the colors are at my fingertips, just I hadn't combined them quite the way Kim has! Kim thanks for this, it's awesome. I appreciate the tips at the end as well.
Happy New Year

Sheila D. 2010-12-31 2:56pm

I love mine too. I have just started to get into it,haven't printed it out yet.But the overall feeling I get from this ebook is to think outside the box when it comes to color. I look at my own color pallette in a new light now.

hotflashwanda 2010-12-31 3:02pm

Worth $60? Any Color Archives with bead pictures coming from Kim Neely will be priceless.

iT IS AWESOME... GREAT FOR INSPIRATION AND A LITTLE DROOLING.... WORTH IS FOR BEGINNERS AND EXPERIENCED ALIKE.....

dicrodi 2010-12-31 3:14pm

I purchased the tut and am glad I did. I plan on having it put into a spiral format so I can easily refer to it before torching. It is not a how to, but contains invaluable color combinations and recipes with commonly available glass, for some colors that are no longer available or hard to find (very few) a replacement color is given. Besides the color recipes it's great eye candy and wonderful inspiration. Although the price is on the high end for tuts I'd purchase it again and feel it is well worth the investment. I wish that it had come out as a soft cover , spiral bound, but realize this probably would have been cost prohibative for the artist. The color combinations and recipes for reactions are well worth it. I'd gladly purchase it again. I highly recommend it. Dicrodi

Money. Well. Spent!

Nanette Marie 2010-12-31 3:37pm

Ditto, it's beautiful and well worth every penny.

LAJ 2010-12-31 3:39pm

First, I must say, that just to be able to sift thru such a vast collection of her previous work & have her reveal the colors she used is the ultimate in bead porn!

Kim is a master at working with color combos, which is where I need the most help personally. So to have such a comprehensive listing of her past work in 1 place is wonderful.
