Books on cane? Do they exist?
 

I have decided to look into getting some books. One I would love to find is one on complicated cane. If that's not what it is called feel free to correct me. ;)
Is there a book out there? One book dedicated to just making cane. Or does it only exist in eBook form?
Since I am learning on my own, I really should have more books to reference. I found some beginner books that I want to order as well.
I am gathering the last few things to make my work area as safe as possible, so I have been researching things I want/need to learn.
I use a Hothead and soft glass with bulk propane...... at least I will once everything is finally set up.O:)

Do you mean a complex twisty with different colors you can wrap around your bead gathers? or do you mean a building a cane like for initials or building a fish design for example and then pulling the large gather into sizable stringers that you can slice into small pieces to add to glass bead gathers?

With a HH you can't get really complex twisties, you can get some very nice combinations but some of the more complex colors like a lot of oxygen to realize their full potential. A HH doesn't have enough oxygen to produce some of the more complex twisties.



I decided to reprint this for anyone that is interested. I hope this glossary helps.

Vetro A Filigrana is cane with spiral patterns

Vetro A Latticino is clear cane with white thread patterns

Vetro A Reticello is "glass with a small network"
A type of filigrana decoration in which clear glass has a pattern of embedded threads in a diagonal crisscrossing arrangement trapping small air bubbles between them.

Vetro A Fili " Thread Glass" A type of filigrana using clear glass that has a pattern of continuous parallel lines.

Vetro A Retortoli or retorti: "Glass with a Twist" A type of filigrana decoration in which intricately twisted threads are embedded in clear glass in parallel lines.

Zanfirico: A type of polychrome cane made by assembling a bundle of different color rods, melted, pulled and then twisted. We call them twisties.
This is what most of us make when pulling our twisties. Zanfirico canes would be the proper terminology. Instead of using bundles we usually just apply colors in stripes to a base cane and make a gather and then pull.

Thank you for the tip about the Hothead limitations. I don't have any immediate plans for an oxy/gas torch.... but I can dream :)

So you want to make your own murrini cane, right? Then cut it into slices to use in your beads (or sell for others to do that.)

You can build some great canes with a HH just test out the color reactions first. Deanne ( theglasszone) has created some really nice canes with a HH. Go to the Library forum and then the sub forum tutorials. Lots of info on how to create canes there.

I have watched that video...... a "few" times. I love to watch people work. I think I have watched all the corning vids more than once ;-). I'll have to watch it some more.... =)

I'll have to go hunt around and see if there is something I just gotta have. I was hoping to find a bound book. It gets so tricky keeping track of printed out things.... you know? Or maybe that's just me... ;)

I think the Cindy Jenkins book, "Beads of Glass" has a quite a few sections on making various types of cane included with other techniques.
A great book with step by steps and lots of lovely photos.
And I believe her other book, "Making Glass Beads" has a few pages on making letter and number murrini cane.

I highly recommend DeAnne's (theglasszone) skull tutorial to get the basics, and
