96 C.O.E Anybody?

Do you presently, occasionally make beads with 96 C.O.E.? (Rods not Frit)

Hi Mike, there's a 2010 thread about Calico in which someone talks about switching. An instructor I had recently uses 96 stringers and dilutes 96 dense colors with 104.

I use 96. I am sad that Gaffer is dropping lampwork cane. I like Reichenbach better than System 96/Uroboros. That's the only three types I have tried.

fionac 2016-08-28 7:09am

I torch components (leaves, stringers) from 96 to fuse, I don't use rods just cut 5mm strips from sheet

I make frit mixes using 96 COE glass from a variety of manufacturers and find that it works well with most 104 COE colors. I guess the small particles makes mixing coes a bit less risky. All the 96 colors from the different makers seem to play pretty well with each other. I also use the 96 rods to make beads, etc.

OMG ...NO .... they have the most gorgeous purples!! I got hooked on all makers of 96 for opaques. I don't use the transparents much because they are so dense. For those I use System 96.

Are you thinking of carrying it Mike? I'd certainly add it to my orders of 104!!

@miniuniworld 2016-08-29 8:07am

can I melt 96 coe on a hot head? thanks in advance =)

Shabrea 2016-08-29 10:31am

Yup
The loss of gaffer canes is heartbreaking. I was just branching out more into their line. So glad I got some of the chalendocy and purple rose before it's gone forever.

Well, the cane is gone. The rod will still be available, and that could be pulled down into cane. Which is what I may do if I ever run out of the last order! I love the blues and the purples. They are just the best. Most everything else I can replace with Reichenbach, at least for my needs.

I like 96 for working with furnace frit without risk of cracking.

Ravenesque 2016-08-30 10:59pm

I've been using more and more 96 because honestly I'm tired of the popping and burning on my chest and arms from 104.

@miniuniworld, yes you can.

I did not know about Gaffer, that is too sad :sad:

Greg ... how do I know if a frit is "furnace frit" or just 96?

niknaks12 2016-08-31 8:54am

I have made a few beads with but only ever with other 96 coe glass, I love the colours.

greghumphrey 2016-09-01 6:27pm

By furnace frit I mean the deeply saturated colors some of the 96 coe glass. As I understand it they make it that way so the hot glass shop crews can get good color when they are making their big stuff.

5betsy 2016-09-02 6:32am

My major glass is 96. For almost 10 years

Zooziis 2016-09-02 8:54am

I use 96 pretty much exclusively. I use spectrum white as a base for frit and came from Val Cox when she was having that pulled by hand. I still have pounds of that because I bought a ton and was a hoarder! I'm having fun using it now!

Yes, I used to make 96COE beads on my hothead all the time

Janet

scootrgrl 2016-09-02 10:29pm

Yes...I like to use heavy 96 frit so I usually use black, white, and clear 96 rods

swehner 2016-09-04 8:07am

I use both 96 and 104, what brand are you think about Mike?

DesertDreamer 2016-09-04 10:20am

I use 96 about 60% of the time. I have a large stash of Val Cox's colors, a bunch of Gail's GG Glass (love her Duos!), and pounds & pounds of Gaffer and Reichenbach. I, too, am heartbroken that Gaffer is bowing out. They've created some splendid colors.

glvz 2016-09-09 6:14pm

I use white, black and clear 96 when making frit beads. Would think about expanding color range,

loribeads 2016-09-09 7:38pm

We use a ton of 96 to make beads and murrini.

Inky 2016-10-01 5:50pm

Will miss it a lot, love 96

Ravenesque 2016-10-06 3:01am

^Why will you miss it?

Mike, you used to have a decent assortment of 96, it would be awesome to be able to buy 104 and 96 in one spot.

mikefrantz 2016-10-06 1:38pm

Where has all the 96 gone?

[quote=Ravenesque;4881237]^Why will you miss it?

It may go the way of the T-Rex to a certain degree, there might/may/will be changes in who makes COE 96 and where it is made, but I am sure that somebody will come along and fill the void.

Sorry I do not have actual facts, "But people are saying"

But there still will be coe104 for a long time.

Mike

33/96/104

That may be possible in the future.

Imaglassgal 2016-10-06 4:36pm

IMHO 96 for blowing won't be going anywhere in my expected lifespan.

Ravenesque 2016-10-06 11:06pm

I agree. Sure, some companies are having to close, or move, or sell, but some are not under the pressures that those manufacturers are or they are figuring things out...so to speak.
