Brown marks & silver wire.

How do you get rid of, or stop from forming in the first place, the brown marks that you get on some glass when you melt silver wire onto the bead?

Blue seems particularly prone to it which is a pity as blue & silver goes so well together.

Am I doing something wrong?

You're not doing anything wrong, the silver is fuming the glass, it more common with some colours like ivory cos they react

You could try a thin layer of clear between the blue and the silver but you'll have to try different clears co some of them react too (reichenbach does)

Or just go with the reaction, it looks good on organic beads

Seems like i read somewhere to flux your silver before fusing..hhhhmmm

Are you talking about soldering or adding it to glass?

Adding it to glass.. I haven't tried it.. Just seems like read it once,, will have to give it a go sometime. So it is unproven at this time.

I don't know of any way to stop that reaction and I do a lot of beads with silver wire. In fact, they are some of my best sellers, with or without the reaction. The lines turn black on transparent yellow and look really cool when they are etched lol!

Thanks girls, as long as I'm not doing something wrong that's OK. Deb, I have seen some without the marks, I will try the trick with the clear next time I do some.

I think some colors are more prone to the brown marks than others. To get less marks, I dot my wire on, instead of winding the wire around a bead.

I think it depends too on how hot you melt the wire on....or how long it's in the flame.
