Help with ventilation openings in cold climate
 

Hello,
I have been without a studio for a long time! For my sanity I need to make space before winter sets in.
I only have a room in the basement with no window. I had a natural gas line put in and electrical. I got a drywall estimate.

I'm stuck and need to figure the best way to vent and supply makeup air. Only one wall can be used for ventilation because it is above ground.
I have a hood(Zephyr) that I used in my last house that I plan to use again.
I live in Alaska and need to know what I can use to keep out the cold air when I am not lampworking. Would a blast gate work or butterfly damper, on each opening?
I would like to put the vent tubing in the wall before they drywall.

Blastgates work very well for controlling air flow when you aren't working. One possible solution for makeup air is to bring a duct in under your table and have outside air come up in front of your torch, under the intake for the hood. This will carry away the torch plume and not pull all of the conditioned air out of your house. I use a 10" hydroponics fan to power my make up air. I still lose a little air from the house, but not much considering the draw of the main vent blower.

I got it with the original GlassCraft hood - it's a 650cfm fan. This fan is designed to fit inside a 10" duct as a booster fan and you will lose some power from turns and such as the static pressure builds. I have a short run and only one turn in my make up system so it works pretty well. I cover the hole with a return vent cover from the AC dept. at HD. It'd good for make up air support but underpowered for primary ventilation.
