Fuming

Hi
I am fairly new to Lampworking and have had some good instruction but am always anxious to learn new techniques. I was watching YouTube videos on fuming. Can anyone tell me please if this technique is possible with a hothead torch?
Any input and/or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Kai:)

It's not something I've ever had luck with on a hothead. Since you can't get an oxidizing flame on that one it really limits how much you can control the flame chemistry.

I also don't think the hot head gets quite hot enough to boil off the metal (silver or gold) into the fume you need to deposit it on the target glass.

Also you really want to double and triple check that the ventilation you have is moving enough air fast enough to get the fumes out of your work area and your home.

Fuming metals is one of the fastest ways of ingesting metals and ingested metals are the hardest to get out of your body.

It's not something to attempt with out dotting all of the i's and crossing all of the t's before hand.

I absolutely second the ventilation importance. I don't regret a penny spent on safety.

Double Helix has Aion. It's a reduction soft glass that I've had really good luck faking some fumed techniques with in my marbles here and there.

Thank you all so much for the input! I will definitely make sure I have excellent ventilation and/or respirator! I have experimented w/DH and enjoy when I can get a reduction w/my hothead.
I will continue exploring the techniques I come across.
Thank you all

Just an extra note about respirators; They will keep stuff out of your lungs but they don't work any good at keeping glass colorants ( like cadmium, copper or other hazardous metals) off your hands, arms work bench, tools and every horizontal surface in your studio where your hands or your familys hands can pick them up and get into your food, drink or on you face.

There really isn't any good substitute for fast moving, high volume air exhaust.

Yes, you can fume gold and silver with a hot head if you experiment. Way too much unsubstantiated dogma and party line quality info here. Toxicity? Do some basic research concerning toxicity to these two metals. You may be surprised with what you DONT find. Use some basic ventilation at all times regardless.
