Hope this isn't just a stupid question but....
 

What shape would I have to start with to get a rectangle when flattened? I make a long cylinder today and flattened thinking I would get a flat long rectangle but instead got flaired out sides. Is it doable with any shape?

When I try for a rectangle shape, I usually need extra glass at each end of the cylinder before flattening. I have not been able to do it consistently so I know I need more p,p,p. Perhaps someone else has another hint?

It's easier if you have a true parallel masher. Flatten top and bottom, rotate 90 degrees and repeat. You can also just use a marver and flatten 1 side at a time.

I'd say graphite marver and paddle

Oh, and don't squish it flat at once. Flatten little by little until you get the size/shape you want. When you squish it flat at once, you distort the shape.

I make a cylinder bead and then add one more wrap to each end. I marver it so that the sides are smooth but the ends taper out a bit (ends a bit wider than the middle of the bead) and then mash.

Ok...add an extra ring of glass at the end of the bead and don't squish all at once. Sounds like that might work. I do have the parallel mashers so I'll give it a try. You guys always have the answers....thanks!
