Question on Dot stack imploding

Can anyone tell me how to implode or compress these dot stacks ontop of one another like this?

It looks like... Make dots, melt them in, coat the whole ball in clear... Repeat all steps 4 times

gullymonster 2014-01-21 4:41pm

oh geez, you make it sound so simple. I figured they were compressed in, but encasing in clear is doable

Bunyip 2014-01-21 4:57pm

Doesn't look like they encased each layer. Looks like they just covered the dots with clear and melted in before making the next row. Easy enough to experiment with.

Dragonharper 2014-01-21 5:33pm

It looks like the inner layer was compressed, maybe, but I agree that the outer layer looks like stacked dots covered in clear. That is an impressive mib.

Think inside out. Make a maria, add the first small dot, melt it in, add a second dot on top ,melt it in, add third,etc..

^^ My bet's on this ^^ (white, blue, white, blue, clear) You can tell by the way the stacks are cupped.

I looked at mib very hard, a bunch of times. This is what I see,
and lets forget about the opal, lets just leave that out, the rest of it
is enough to fathom.

Maria a good size rod and do the dots for the center compression,
He used white - cobalt - and elvis red. Poke them slightly and compress,
and twist them just a bit. Now round this back up, making sure that your
termination point is neat and gathered in to a small point before rounding.
You might need some clear added here for depth before you add the dots.
Then build the stacked dots.
Start with one color combo either the red and white or the blue and white.
Do graduated rows from the middle in sets of three.
Each dot: Example: tiny red dot, cover with white, cover with clear, cover with red, cover with white, cover with clear.
When you get the three arms done of this cover each one with another dot of clear for depth.
Then repeat in the spaces with the blue and white.
Cover all with clear.
As you work you would keep the marble round, keep putting it into your mold to keep the
shape as you work.
Anyway, that's what I see there, I might try it and post a picture.
Anyone else? Give it a try and post your picture, it might be fun
to see what we could come up with.

Ahhhh......shadup
for just a minute there I forgot about all that carap.

This is really more like an investigation, or speculation on technique, certainly
not a tut. A tut is when you know how to do something and teach,
this is pure conjecture, just plain simple research. Nobody really knows how it's done...............
Better watch out Chris, your buns will be yipping. lol.

You are the same little kid who threw rocks at hornet nests aren't you? :)

The center looks like a tube implosion made on an open end tube. The nearly parallel lines can result from holding the tube in and elbow down position so that as the glass gathers it collapses into the tube. It looks like he didn't close the pattern on the back of the marble.

After the implosion is done drop in opal and constrict the tube around it. The whorl that you see is probably the result of the heavy solid implosion marble twisting as the glass between it and the rest of the tube is melted down around the opal.

He adds white to the back to hide the open implosion and then does the dot stacks. You can see where one layer has curled up a bit from the dots placed on the next layer up

Compare that to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qz7SR3OjvRE

Not a Tut, just surmising about process for layering the dot stack as shown in the above video.

I was imagining that there was a more elegant way of layering those dot stacks than just covering each layer with clear.

I'm going to try compressing each ring of dots, then covering with clear before adding the next ring, starting closest to midpoint and working towards outer ring. Pic to come

Holy moly--this is so awesome!!

pretty sure Yoshi does his layers of dots on tube starts on small tube implodes, dot stacks a larger tube and incases larger and larger tubes with the dot pattern over each other. Better control of pattern and can vac air out of each layer.

Talonst 2014-01-22 5:31pm

I'm curious to know the methods that he's using. They look to me to be tube incasements, but I've never seen him work.

There was some discussion on Melting Pot about this not long ago and there were suggestions that he was using a swedish overlay encasement technique - apparently a technique used in furnace glass adapted for the torch.

One of the posters in that discussion pointed to this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXL6c...ature=youtu.be

starting at around 10:30 you can see the tube that is being set up for implosion which will form half of the the center of the collaboration marble they were working on which is shown in this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGoB9cbDFI4

At around 11 minutes you can see him paddling on a large gather of clear.

Haven't had a chance to try this out myself, but interested if anyone has any insights.

Thanks Talonst, those where great to see. I think
those are all made with tubing, those Japanese artists are just insane.
I am good or ok with some things but tubing is not one of those things.
I did try my idea for the marble and it is sad folks, just sad.
This is the reason I don't make marbles, I'm just not good at them,
I would be lucky to get $5 for this, its ugg lee. I must makes things I
can sell, so in the future, I will stick to what I am good at.
So don't laugh, here it is:

and it took like an hour to make.
I wish I could say it looks better in person, but it doesn't.

Bunyip 2014-01-24 5:50am

Mary:

First off I'd like to say: It all sounds a bit ridiculous when I come out and mock the situation that way, doesn't it?

Second, I think that marble is a wonderful proof of concept.

Third, someone will probably love it and want to buy it, much to your surprise but to nobody else's because it's actually pretty cool.

Well, I actually shot them from a distance with a slingshot or pellet gun ;)

Mary K 2014-01-24 7:42am

Hi Chris, yes I agree, you do sound ridiculous at times, it's ok I appreciate your
"sense" of humor. And thanks for the comment, I think.
