Annealing schedule - found the answer!

Does any one have the annealing schedule both for 104 and also the annealing schedule for Boro?

Many thanks!

Cecilia

This is a well covered subject on LE. Give search a try and see what you come up with.

However, chapter 8 in "Contemporary Lampworking" provides a nice set of charts for both COE 104 and 33 glass. Plus an excellent discussion about the annealing process. A recommended book for all lampworkers.

Just in case anyone else finds the thread here looking for an answser, here goes:

Soft (104, 96 or 90initial temp can be lowered to 900 for bullseys)

950, hold 1.5 hr
ramp to 700 over 3 hrs
elements off (for a fiber kiln you can go down to 400 over 4 hrs)

Boro-

1075, hold for 1hr
down to 960 over 2 hrs
hold 30 min at 960
elements off

Thank you Cecelia for asking this question and Mike for answering. I'm also looking for an annealing schedule for boro so this is perfect.

Here's a question about annealing that I cannot find an answer to, and yes, I have used the search function AND Google, lol! If I batch anneal boro how slowly do I need to ramp up to 1075? I have a couple beads for dreadlocks made out of TAG's Queen Bee and I really really don't want them to thermal shock!

An hour and a half should work two if you want to be really conservative. I just ramped some toadstools up to 1050 over about 1.5 hours no problems.

Again a copy of Contemporary Lampworking (all three volumes) is your best friend. He really takes the time and goes into the why's and how's of annealing and the appendix in the back has a full set of charts.

Thank you for such a quick response!

I'll have to look into buying Contemporary Lampworking. It sounds like it would be a very useful reference.

If you ask ten lampworkers for annealing schedule you will most likely get ten different answers. In my case, the annealing schedule is different than the one listed in this thread and yet has not failed even with marbles.

Ramp up times and annealing temperatures are dependent on the thickness of the material being annealed. Thus, using the charts in "Contemporary Lampworking" will provide the needed data for setting up your kiln's ramp controller.
