Lampwork on enameled copper tutorials
Hi all, it's been eight years since I wrote and published these tutorials, and the technique has recently exploded in popularity.
I've been quietly giving them away for the last couple of years, but I think I've just come up on someone's radar--so to preclude for-profit redistribution of my (AFAIK, lol) original technique, I'm offering them here for free. Also, please, if these links don't work, message me---I'm using Google docs, but I'm a novice. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KQ3...R0PWsM4wx/view https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Rsh...j2IGks8Oc/view Addendum: Random notes in no particular order: 1. I now anneal pieces with a heavy application of glass--rather than change the file, I just add this note. 2. Joan at Schlaifers has passed away, sadly. 3. While you can use the Thompson enamels formulated for glass as decoration, I do not recommend using them as a base layer, especially if you're going to add very much glass on top. A jar of white undercoat is a small investment in the longevity of your piece. 4. Be aware of the alloy on your copper. Roof flashing is cheap and easy to obtain, but some of it will form a layer of scale that cannot be worked away in the flame--your enamel will practically shed--very distressing if it happens once it's out of your hands. C110 is 99.9% pure, and again, a small investment if you care about the longevity of your pieces. I've also heard, but can't confirm, that some roof flashing contains arsenic. 5. Pardon the photo quality, lol, this is 8 years old, and my camera wasn't the greatest! |
thank you! these look fabulous!

Thank you for your generosity!
|
very generous, thank you
|
Thank you so much! I purchased enamels, and now maybe I will actually make something with them!
|
If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask!
|
That is so nice of you; I've been wanting to try this!

These are lovely. Thanks for your generosity!

Is this boro or soft glass?

Soft glass--104

Carolyn - how sweet of you to offer these free. I've been curious about how the small components are made. Thank you.
 |
These are so great and a pleasure. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing. Linda

So wait, as far as your notes... a jar of white undercoat should go on first, both sides, and melt in before we add the enamel color?
|
Not a whole jar, lol, but yes, 1010 as the base coat, both sides. :)
|
lol ok, thank you
|
Thank you so much! I have been wanting to try bead caps, as I bought a punch and copper and a doming tool and maybe some headpins. Will the Thompson's 104 sampler enamels I have collecting dust in my studio work? Do these not need to be annealed at all?
Thank you again! |
Has anyone tried enameling stainless steel?
|
Thompson now says the 104 enamels are in the range that will fit copper, but they don't go as far as recommending them for copper. For learning, it should be fine--for selling, I would use the 1000/2000 series formulated to fit metals.

Thank you so much for this!
|
That was so kind of you! I forgot i had them from years ago!
|
Lovely!
|
Thank you very much. When I was a little kid, my sister got a copper/enamel kit with a little kiln. Don't know what happened to the kiln. But she had a lot of fun with it. I liked watching (we are 7 years apart in age). I really appreciate this.

THANK YOU. Just what I needed exactly when I needed it.
Yep, the universe still works. |
Wow
This looks really interesting! I’ll have to try that someday....
|
Beautiful!!
|
Thank you so much. I love all of your work :)

Thank you so very very much. I have recently seen some lampwork on enamel and was very curious on how it was done. A couple of questions if I may, what is white undercoat, is it just white enamel powder? Do I just use 104 enamel?
Thank you again |
Thank you, thank you! How awesome of you to share. I have a huge box of enamels sitting in the studio for years. Tried a few times but didn't have a clue as to what I was doing.... Need to get them out again. <3
