Weird Flame Away From Torch
Hoping someone can help - my Mini CC torch will not get a correct flame. It just blows out when turning the oxygen on. I cleaned all the filters, etc on the oxycon. Let it run all day, etc.
I just tried again and I just barely turned on the oxycon while the propane flame was going to see what would happen. Now I have a big bushy flame that starts 2 inches away from the torch head. It just dances around out away from the torch with a light blue circle type flame, going into a blue and yellow flame. No flame at all at the torch. Is this an oxycon problem? I have an M20 that has been a bit finicky lately, but nothing like this. I'm at a loss. |
A few of possibilities but by no means every possibility. You may have too much O2 pressure running through your torch. Check your LPM setting on your oxycon. Check your O2 valve on your mini CC. Also, you may have your Oxycon turned up to maximum flow and this can produce an inefficient stream with not enough oxygen. Or, your oxycon just is not producing enough O2.

I have this happen if I'm working on the torch and then need to go take a break. I shut it fown then come back and go to lite and it does this. I have found for me if I shut down, shut off the propane and OxyContin. Then open the lines to empty them both completely. Usually that will fix it.

If memory serves me right, it sounds like the "dragon's breath" flame that you can get by turning the oxygen off entirely, and propane up. Is it possible that the pressure is too high on the propane? |

And I agree. Stopping OxyContin before torching is a good idea ;) Alli |
LOL, I didn't even notice it but then I was in the car LOL (no, not driving and texting while on oxycontin) LOL seriously tho, spell check drives me nuts and I'm sorry I gave the wrong impression 8-[

I've tried to shut down the torch, start over, etc. Nada. I'm going to try it today with a different oxycon and see if that helps. If that doesn't work, I'll switch torches, and see if it's that. Not being able to torch is getting annoying. There's got to be an answer somewhere :(

Good luck Donna! It sounds like your experiments should find the problem pretty quickly.

Yep, I just switched out the M20 for my old 5 oxycon from Kimberly, and it fired right up. Great, spent all that money on the M20 from the guy that's out of business, and it lasts less than a year. Sigh. At least now I can torch, lol.

Maybe the M20 can be revived. New sieve beds, or something? Glad you figured it out, at least.
