Is there any tubes made of the soft glass?
Hi everybody,
I want to know if there is any tubes made of the soda lime glass? because there are tubes and rods made of boro glass. and if there isn't any, can any one tell me why? Thanks a lot :-) |
I know Devardi makes some but I've heard all their glass is sub-par quality and can be very shocky in the flame.
You can also search for "flint glass tubing" which is soda lime. Those will probably only come in clear and I'm not sure of COE, but they make them. Best of luck! |
I don't have any answers, but if I had to guess, I would say because boro is much better at holding shape in the flame than 104 - but just a guess.

I got some from some reseller that came from a monster glass chandelier.
But without a excellently controlled warming and cooling kiln it breaks without the slightest provocation when you try to work it. That was one of the main reasons the scientist community developed Boro in the first place more than a century ago. The Masters in Italy can make sculpture with soft glass but you never see them heating soft glass a second time unless they are attaching more glass and even then they keep things small like the size of a fat rod of soft glass. Say maybe 10 mil or maybe a fat finger thickness. And its always solid, not tubular. |
Thanks a lot guys for your answers, It helped me a lot.
That's what I was thinking, but I wanted to be more positive. and I was hanger to knowing the reasons. |
Schott used to make tubing in the 90COE range but pretty sure it's no longer made. Also Glasskolben (sp?) are a...not really a tube but a bubble attached to a blow pipe, usually for making ornaments, but I've seen hollow sculpture made with them. Pretty sure they are in the 90 to 92 COE range. Plus I'm vaguely remembering something about clear neon tubing being in the same range but after a quick search I can't find the COE of neon tube.

Yes there is, but the options are limited these days. What you're looking for is supplied to the neon sign industry - it is soda-lime-ish COE 104.
Much of the tubing is coated with phosphors, but you can still get clear and colored glass that is uncoated in diameters from 6-25mm. Like I said, stock is limited, but you can contact either of the below companies and check what's in stock. Just be clear that you want "uncoated" glass if you're using it for lampworking. I don't recommend trying to buy it with the phosphor and trying to clean it out. The phosphors are baked on and however hard you try, some will remain and cause troubles with lampworking maneuvers. Glass is available from Abitech Supply in CA or Ablon Technologies in NY. |

i've got some 104 COE tubing if you need some, i'd sell it. never used it. i bought it years ago, pretty thin wall and shocky. it's from a chandelier iirc, that's what i was told when i bought it.
if the OP or anyone is interested i'll dig it out and get exact tube size/dimensions for ya. |
I bought some of the "casino glass tubes " from arrow springs, (without paying attention to the size) They're huge! Almost the diameter of a paper towel core. They said it was 104, but I could barely melt it with my HH.

No surprise there....Did someone tell you it was a good idea? |

Truthfully, it's really the Fireworks torch I bought at Hobby Lobby over 20 years ago to get into this. I broke my HH when I accidentally knocked it off the porch.
But I still should have been able to get it to melt, unless it's not really 104 (it acted a lot like Boro, just getting hot enough to nudge around a little) |
I used to do neon years back and still have tubing. Clear in assorted mm’s. They come in 4’ lengths but can be easily cut. It’s in storage now but if anyone is interested, let me know.

Lauscha Glass in Lauscha Germany carries all the sizes. It's the nicest clear in the world.
