I found a cheap 1.5 quart slow cooker, filled it with annealing bubbles (Heritage Glass), stuck in the Devardi rods and turned it on high.

Result: Only one exploding rod and much quicker melting.

Oh, one more thing which DesertDreamer reminded me of. I don't have a kiln, but I put the used but still hot rods into a mug full of hot annealing bubbles (I have the mug sitting on a cup warmer.)...
