Many of the Lauscha glasses can be 'struck' back to opaque when they go transparent. Wedgewood blue as well as some of the opaque whites and pinks work this way. ~Juliet

I keep a "reference" bead on my workbench in front of me. It's captive on a stringer so I can hold it up near my bead in progress on the mandrel and eyeball size and aspect ratio pretty easily.

I use a big bolt cutter and generally try to convince DH to do it for me. ;) He grinds the end on a big grinder so that there are no burrs to keep the beads from coming off.
