Soda Lime Times had a great tut May 2013 by Angie Gemsa. I made several beads using it and they turned out well. You can get just the one issue for around $7, I think.

Pipes are made from borosilicate glass. I would ask the above in the Boro Room. I think boro glass can be batch annealed readily and you don't need vermiculite. I would ask there.
