I've used fibre blanket, and still do for short sessions at the torch where its too costly to run a kiln for a handful of beads - I batch them later. I cover mine with turkey foil - the tough stuff...

PPP - sorry! Pull stringers of a nice stiff colour, pull different thicknesses and lengths. Make a simple base bead in the same colour, a simple round bead or a squished bead for more surface area....

Personally I make a small core of clear, then dip clear in frit and melt it in to the gather. Add wraps of fritty glass over clear core, stretching the glass out into ribbons rather than blobbing it...
