I've been using a transparent ruler on my white background. I just don't use it for the main shot
I started doing that (and also occasionally a penny) after a number of folks complained they couldn't tell how big something was, even though I give measurements... This way the ruler can easily be cropped, if you want a more professional-looking shot for slides or something.
