I mostly use 6mm rods: I melt a gather about twice the size of the bead I'm about to encase, then make one thick, quick wrap around the equator of the bead. I then quickly heat the wrap the the bottom of the flame, keeping the core out of the flame, and then roll it on my marver to squoosh the encasing layer. Then I melt it all round again.
