If you really want to impress upon your friend safety first, and you like your torch time together and don't want to miss it, you can wear a full face respirator. I have one and use it most of the time. It takes a little to get used to but when you are finished torching you will feel just fine.
Your friend might get tired of looking at you looking like something out of Star Wars.....LOL But it will let her know how serious you are but that you also still want to torch with her..
