Default Fuming question

I thought I'd like to try fuming this weekend, can I do it with soft glass or do I need to use boro?

It works with either.

Am I correct in assuming that I still have to "strike" the fume to get the colors? Which is better for soft glass, kiln striking or flame?

Are you talking about fuming with silver and gold?

If so you wont need to flame strike or kiln strike.
Some do consider it easier to fume soft glass using a boro clear or cobalt rod as they say they have more control, but that doesn't mean it can't be done with a clear soft glass rod.

Make sure you have excellent ventilation and please also consider wearing a mask correctly rated for the smallest partials.

A small bit of .999 silver on the tip of a boro rod works fine, though fused quartz is best if you have it. Put your metal at the tips of the candles and roll your bead to be fumed out in the flame where it's cooler and the metal can condense on the surface. You'll see the color change. Here's a second on ventilation. If it's not top notch, don't fume. Period.

When I fume with silver I use a very small flame that is mostly propane. I get a blue candle about 1/4" long on my Carlisle CC burner and hold the silver at the tip of that 1/4" blue candle. It fumes real fast. Basically, once you start to see a slight yellowish color on your maria, or bead, or whatever you are fuming onto, you are done. If you keep fuming after you get that slight yellowish color you will probably wind up with 'white' instead of the blue that you typically get when you silver fume.
