Well sir, I will have you know that my mandrels are usually cut by a female... and they're cut to order. I COULD cut my own mandrels, but I'm too busy getting people's roofs installed. I certainly hope that is a manly enough endeavor to excuse my slight lapse

I most definately would cut my own if glass art was my main source of income.

And speaking of Manly... You should see the utter mess I made of soft glass last evening... I felt like my moretti needed some viagra

Edit: I did manage to successfully make a couple boro beads before being chased away from the torch!

Encased Viagra... now there's a new idea. I'm sure they would be a hit at the retirement homes. Kind of a "In case of emergency, BREAK GLASS" type of thing.

lol

We got the parts to fix then hook up the second oxycon. I got unceremoniously kicked off the torch and he's in there making boro beads..

The whole broken nipple thing had me weirded out just a little.

Yeah what Pipyr said, we need pics of the nipple to make sure it's healing right.

Sorry Kara, didn't mean to weird you out.

heh. I made spacers. I discovered that exotic red doesn't like being encased. Twice. I discovered that it's possible to temperature shock boro... twice. I made a beautiful implosion with DAP, during which I discovered that a "cold seal punty" on boro... is just that. That's right. I played the bouncing marble game. Twice.... and then once more.

Boro is fun

None of the exotics like being encased, but if you must, be firm and give them a real stern talking to, Twice...

This is really nice of you, Chad! You should talk to Brad and do a book.

Northstar Double Amber Purple - Work it hot and let it go clear, then strike it.

Northstar Butterscotch - One of my favorite colors. Will fume other colors around it if used in a reducing flame. Can yield dark browns, tans, and purples.

Northstar Blue Moon - Like Turquesa, but darker. Gets blues and greens.

Northstar Blackberry - Good luck. Should be called "crackberry". I've never used it without it cracking.

Northstar Lava - Encase first or it will boil very easily much like real lava.
Northstar Sublime - A nice transparent green. You need to use a lot of it to get a green. Works good as a tint over other colors.

Northstar Onyx - Will boil if not careful. Can reduce as well. Work it slow and you should be okay.

Northstar Multi - Can get anything from green to gray to red, depending on flame atmosphere.

Northstar Red Exotic - Boils easily. Need to use a heavy oxidizing flame to get reds.

Northstar Star White - Work it slow. Goes clear if heated too hot, and doesn't turn back white.

Northstar Caramel - A darker version of Butterscotch.

Northstar Green Amber Purple - Doesn't strike much. Basically a green with a little silver in it.

Glass Alchemy Silver Strike-3 - Virtually identical to Butterscotch.

Glass Alchemy Amazon Night - A black with silver in it. Looks okay on the surface. Works okay encased as well. Use oxygen to burn off the haze if you want it black.

Kimble Clear 12mm & 7mm Rod - You should know what to do with these...

Now there's an idea. I have a message on my cell phone from Brad right now about a class. I need to call him back. Maybe I'll talk to him about a book when I do...

I've been referring to your post diligently, Chad. Thanks again!

My personal experience has pretty much matched your comments, although you might not have gone far enough with the exotic red, or maybe I got a bad batch? The stuff was boiling before it was soft enough to apply to a bead, and encased it cracked on me.

Try working farther out in the flame. You don't need it super oxidizing. Just a little more oxidizing than neutral. I haven't had much luck encasing it either. I have done some inside-out frit stuff with it and it worked okay, but I still have about a 50-60% success ratio with that. I'm not a huge fan of any of the exotic colors. They all seem to be more trouble than they're worth to me.
