Mandrel burning
Hello everyone. This is pretty new to me, but I’m told it’s a good place to ask questions. So, I’m melting in a clear casing on a (not large) bead, Shaping a bit, & suddenly the last 1.5 inches of my mandrel falls to the table—with the bead. I may have been focusing on the hole area to make sure the casing covered it, but I don’t think I was using excessive heat at this point. It has happened before, to me, but I haven’t heard/ seen anyone mention it. Anybody?

yep, happens. You get the hang of it fairly quickly, and then it's just once in a while.
It's a lot to pay attention to at once when you are starting out....a lot of us use thicker mandrels and move to the thinner ones as we gain experience. Usually 3/32. 1/16's melt pretty fast.

What's your torch? I have never burnt through a mandrel, but have felt like I was close trying to round out a boro bead. Plus, the 1/16ths get softer with use, so maybe it was time to ditch that one anyway. But I do think you kept the heat in that spot too long.

You might check to ensure your mandrel is stainless steel.
Heat doesn't travel well in stainless if I remember rightly and other metals can burn through sometimes before the glass even starts melting.
