Raku problem
I just made up a bunch of raku over intense black beads. The looked beautiful with many colors as I put them in the kiln at 970 degrees. They came out 1/2 colored and 1/2 very dark on each bead. Does anyone have an idea as to what happened?

Hi Donna ... it sound as though your bead may be striking again?
Are you using the 104 raku or the 96? What temp are you garaging at?
For me the 96 raku works great but results can be a bit serendipitous at the best of times.

Donna, you might try lowering your kiln temp. to 925.

Then do I go up to 975 again and hold for 20 min. before dropping the temp?

No need to do that usually ... just leave it at the lower temp for longer for annealing purposes. Sometimes you want to kiln strike the glass further and then you might raise the temp back up to 975 under those circumstances.

I may be offbase here but could it be the environment within your kiln? Went and hunted up an old thread for you to read.... maybe it pertains?

No idea if I'm right but my thoughts went in this direction.

Thanks Sue! I'll try lowering the annealing temp first then, if needed, I'll try the charcoal.

i'd just run them through another annealing cycle @ 975F. i did that by accident once with some poopy coloured raku beads and they struck to very pretty pinks and purples. (I anneal at 980)
