Frit question......
Can I make boro frit like 104 coe frit by melting it into cold water, or does it not expand and contract enough to shock into tiny bits like that?
Thanks,
Alison

I've not been successful with that method and boro. I used cold water but not water with ice in it.... must try.... Also, maybe making a real thin pressed disk and dunking....
Just purchased mine instead

Too broke for more glass now so I guess I'll try the ice water.
Thanks,

I smash mine in a homemade frit smasher (tech term ). If you make frit using a dry method make sure you wear a mask. Tried water, tried water in a blender (what a mess). I usually smash and then use a burr grinder (I go through a lot of coffee grinders). You can get metal from the grinder if you aren't careful.

Easiest way is to wander into the pipe aisle at your local hardware store.
Get two pieces of iron pipe, one that can slide into the other. Ideally get pieces that are threaded on both ends.
Get a cap for the bottom of the larger piece
Get a cap for both ends of the smaller piece.
Tell the nice man asking to help that no, you aren't making a pipe bomb. Ignore him as he watches suspiciously from the end of the aisle anyway.
Cap the bottom of the larger piece
Cap both ends of the smaller pipe
Don a good mask (n-100 I'd say)
Throw in your glass and smash away.
I like to use a 2 pound mason hammer on the pipe myself because I get sick of pounding it by hand, but either way works. This does make a lot of dust, so work with excellent ventilation. All told you'll spend maybe 12 dollars on your new frit smasher.
edit: One thing I forgot....run a magnet over your frit after you're done. This method tends to allow in some metal flakes, but since you're using iron pipe.....magnetic cleaning.

Thanks All,
I have a homemade pipe frit masher I guess I will pound away as It does not sound like the ice water works with the boro.

My latest technique for making boro frit is heat rod until molten hot(glowing) drop it in cold ice water (1-2 seconds) pull out then let air cool (condiment container works well for this) the glass will start to expand and contract breaking into pieces the pipe and hammer method also works great .

Ahhaaaa!
So a quick dip in the ice water then out. I will try that thanks. I hate my frit crusher and it hates me.
