Question Does anyone use slate?

I have a peice of slate from a pool table, would it be good for a torching table? I know my kiln can go on it w/o burning it. Doesn't slate shed black dust? Could I cut it in half with a wet saw? It is a bit wide so I may not be able to reach the back and I would have some wasted space.

I can get ahold of a SS table for 50.00, but I have also seen granite for sale too. I could put it on top of a homemade plywood table. I would like to be able to marver on my table too.

I also have some tempered glass shelves that I could put on top of the plywood, would that melt, or shatter if it gets to hot?

I appreciate any suggestions and answers to my questions.

Thanks
Karen

The slate sounds good to me. Sure you could cut it with a wet saw.
Granite or SS is nice as well.

I doubt if tempered glaass would melt just being on your table. Maybe if you dropped something large and hot on it, though.

I used slate on my last bench. Just 12" x 12" tiles laid over a particle board folding table. Worked great! Have the same now, only with ceramic tile. My kiln sits to the side on an old sewing table topped with a scrap piece of marble. I also have some areas my husband covered with sheet metal. (Used to make ductwork...)
