Default How to make sideways tube beads or torpedo shaped

I am wondering how best to make beads on a mandrel, that are elongated (tubes) and straight but the holes would be so that the beads would be perpendicular to the necklace, just to add some interest. On the same topic, when I was in Murano, I saw some large lovely red opaque torpedo- shaped beads running perpendicular to the necklace. I believe those may have been blown . Anyone know how to achieve those? Thanks.

There are some presses you can order, or custom order, to help with the shaping for those. Otherwise, I have seen them "built" with dots on each side but I don't know how they would be even without some kind of adapted tool.

Those are nice for toggles. You could check perlenpress or bavarian. Cattwalk has a few too, in different shapes. Have fun!

Have you considered making one long bead and welding a short tube bead to it at a right angle and then filling out the "armpits" ?

You would have to take your time getting both mandrels through the bead door on a kiln but it shouldn't be too difficult.

When I make beads like that I gently spin the mandrel in my hands when the glass is warm. The centrifigal force helps to stretch them, but be careful!! You don't want flying glass.!!!

I've also found it is a bit easier with coe 90 glass as it's a bit stiffer and more likely to stretch rather than fling off the mandrel!!

Have fun!!!
