Well I just ordered a set of FBA's not sure why I never had them before I think I was told did not need them for my surface mix torch way back when. Reading these treads wow and that video. I got the at the regulator type.

Chances of flashback are much lower on a surface mix than a premix, but it is not impossible. Not impossible to me means that I still need flashback arrestors. LOL Good choice, John.

There is a minimum amount of pressure required to drive the gas through the FBA. Concentrators don't produce the additional pressure and you won't get oxygen flowing through one. Additionally, unless you have a reserve tank (another matter) there isn't a large store of oxygen in a concentrator to contribute to a big fire.

Hi everyone,
I have Smith quick connects that are also supposed to operate as flashback arrestors.
I got them for convenience so I could disconnect my hoses easily . . . but figured they would add a bit of safety also.
I was told that I didn't actually need arrestors as I've a Lynx which is a surface mix. Is this right?

I know of no quick disconnects that actually have FB arrestors, only check valves. What your were told about the Lynx is true only if you assume all is working properly. As soon as you add in the possibility of an internal leak, which does happen, then it is BS. Need them? Guess it is based on what you are planning for. Best case or worst case.

You need to look a little harder....
model numbers: FRQD4D, FRSFQD4D, FRSoQD4D... and more are integral flashback quick couplers.

Flashback arrestors are a must have for any torch. If your oxy tank goes empty it may suck your flame into the torch, even on surface mix torches.
I use a foot peddle to control the outer fire on my Mirage so I have the FBA's at the regs because I have hose near the ground, about 1 inch off the ground. If I drop a large piece or marble it could burn the through the hose. FBA's at the torch would do nothing to stop the flame from traveling to the tanks.
I also use the all in one FBA's/QD's from Sundance on two of my torches and a combination of standard FBA's coupled with QD's on another torch.

I use natural gas with low pressure with my GTT Scorpion. I had a flashback arrestor on the line to start, but the low pressure gas couldn't get through the arrestor. I use two oxycons for oxygen. That said, I have arrestors for both fuel and oxy, I just can't use them with my current setup. Safety first!

BFA'S are filled with metal find like a brillo pad. During a back flash the metal starts to burn and starves the fire of oxygen. The hose will still be hot. However, T12 hose is designed with that in mind. Figure out what caused the back flash, take a deep breath, replace the arrestor, and keep on trucking.
