Default GIMP - how?

On one of the threads there were several people that suggested using GIMP for picture editing.
So, I have downloaded GIMP ... ummm now what?
(I'm still trying to go through the tutorials at www.gimp.org)
Is there anyone willing to point me in the right direction or know of some tips somewhere that apply more to editing pictures of glass? Could be I am just looking at the wrong tutorials at GIMP.
Hopefully I won't have to do too much
Thanks
Deb

I've just started using it as well Deb. I like it. It is comparable to Photoshop, and has a lot of the same things. I think the important things are to use Levels. Go into Tools, Levels, click on the far right bar (they just show up as auto, then three bars - which are black/grey/white balance) and then click on the far right one, for white, then click back on a white section of your picture. That's a quick way to levels.

Let me know if you have any specific questions. Maybe I can help you. Otherwise, I might be here blabbering about a bunch of options you already know how to use!

Best,
M

I was going to start a new thread and found this one through search. My exact question. I'm not good with layers, never was. I have a photo of a bead and have isolated the bead now what. I want to make only the background grayscale but haven't a clue. Everytime I use the mode button the whole photo goes gray.

Help!
