Default Terra Cotta Looking Bead?

Does anyone have a "recipe" for making beads (104) to look like old terra cotta?? I had a floor once that was made out of terra cotta spanish tile and very streaky and I'd love to be able to recreate that in a bead. I've tried sandstone, painted desert and a couple of others but not quite there yet. Any ideas???

Much appreciated!

How 'bout some dark coral mixed in the torch with some of the darker browns???? Think that would come close.

And although I've never used it personally, what color does the red copper green yield????

HTH,
Lea

Have you tried Red Roof Tile in your mix?

Angie, what shade is the terra cotta that you are wanting? I have some wonderful brick terra cotta colored rods (cinnamon coral) that De was good enough to send me that are the most gorgeous color! If it is the red/brown terra cotta color, I will be happy to send you a couple of rods. Cheers! Joan

No red roof tile yet but think I'll go mix that with some browns and see what I come up with. Not looking for it to be tooooo coral ... just old and worn looking.

Thanks!!

Hey Joan ... I want something that is very streaky with brick and even some tans in it. What manufacturer are the cinnamon coral rods? I hate to have you send them if they aren't quite right ... you don't happen to have a pic of any beads you might have used it with, do you?

I may be wrong, but I think they were Effetre or maybe a Vetrofond odd lot - I don't think they are made anymore. They are a wonderful shade of brick/terra cotta red and have some striation in them. I don't have any pics yet of the beads, but I can take a couple and post them for you when I get home from EMT class after work tonight around 11pm. They would be a good base color for you to start with perhaps? I'll make a note so I don't forget to do this for you tonight.....

Maybe Cosmic Storm etched? It's kind of coppery orange like tile.

Effetre Dusty Rose Coral and Red Roof Tile are very similar. Depending on the batch, I can't tell the rods apart.

If this helps, here's a photo of the Cinnamon Coral - I think this is what you got from me, Joan! And it's made by Effetre, by the by...

It's really not too coral - more a awesome, old-spanish-tile color IMHO.

Handpulled Red Roof Tile is a dead ringer! Machine and handpulled are quite different. You wont get the same results with the Machine!

Hi Angie! Thanks De!!! Here are the pics of the beads made with De's glass - I think you can see the striations. I hope that it is ok - let me know and I will post a few rods to you. I also have some red roof tile that I can put in too - I think it is handpulled, I got it in the garage as well but can't remember from who. The second pic is a pic of what the red roof tile that I have looks like - it is the brown/yellow looking stripes over the bordello base (just ignore the silver glass on it!) Maybe the two together? Cheers! Joan PS - De is right - it is an AWESOME color - I really love it!

Joan - yup, that's it! I even like the look of the second set for what I'm thinking of doing. What silver glass is this? And did I say THANK YOU for taking the time to take those pics!!!

Kathy - I haven't tried Hawaiian Clay but I'll definitely go take a look.

De - where do I get the cinnamon coral and the hand pulled red tile roof?

And thank you to everyone that's posted!!! You guys are great

Hi Angie!! You are welcome! I'm glad that it looks like what you had intended. I think that the silver glass is either Nyx or Psyche (barely reduced) - possibly Electra. I have extras of all of them and will include them in the package with the Red Roof Tile and some of the Cinnamon Coral. Are you in the RAGOK? If not, just pm me with your address and I will get them in the mail to you tomorrow. Cheers! Joan

Red roof tile and coral mixed in, should lighten the mix without being too peachy coral colored.

If you don't have RRT, then try the Effetre dark brown mixed with coral.

Thanks everyone for your input! I'm experimenting with all your ideas so they are all appreciated.

Last night when trying to figure out what I could buy at the lauschalady sale, I was reading about blutonium which I purchased a month ago and haven't used yet ... look what I found:

"The formula contains copper, and can be reduced to a creamy opaque terra cotta."

OMG!!!! Can't wait to try it! I'll let you know when I try it. And, again, thanks for all the responses!

It sounds pretty simple but I've felt that orange glass dipped in baking soda gave the appearance of old terra cota. Maybe coral dipped in baking soda would give it a better hue.

And I agree that etching might be a nice touch once you find the color you are seeking.

Erm - just a thought I came across this amazing thread earlier tonight:

http://www.anndavisstudio.com/articles/Scavo/

Maybe the techniques outlined in this tutorial may help, if you were to find the right colour glass and then... add some creative input + a bit of the usual 'gosh let's have a go' magic dust.

Will be experimenting with Scavo myself and will post threads when ready.
All the best, Greg

PS I don't know Ann yet - but big respect to her for a great Tutorial

I don't recall that it is a regularly available color (the Cinnamon "version" of the Coral, that is...it's an odd lot). You might want to put a "Want to Buy..." (WTB") in Garage Sale and someone may have some they can sell you.

I've seen this tutorial before...haven't tried it, though. I'm kinda skeered of chems - especially if they are this caustic! If you do decide to try this, please be very careful!

Personally, I think the idea of etching is very interesting and would give Cinnamon Coral that real matte finish of true terra cotta pottery. Nice...

Here's a Vessel I made some time ago with it...I was going for a Terra Cotta color, along with the feather, to give it a South Western sense to the finished piece. I think for sure I'm gonna etch it!

This thread here shows a set I made where I used coral and and little Effetre dark brown special to get the hues. Is this what you are looking for?

OOH, Lisi, that is a pretty color!

Not quite pink, not quite coral...

What coral did you use? If we didn't have 14,000 kinds of that color...haha.

This one is the latest batch from Howaco, and she's had this one in stock at least since a year ago. It looks like the "standard" coral color, meaning the one we get when they at the factory "get it right".

It's not brownish rosy, cinnamon, mango or orangy, or odd in any way. It looks like the regular coral.

(er...is there a "regular" coral??) LOL

Haha.

I have so many of the corals, I don't even know what "regular" coral IS!!

I have vetrofond coral, and it's a cinnamon reddish color. Pretty!!

Did you get that from Frantz recently?? I did and this is what Howaco's Effetre looks like right now too. A cinnamon red color. This was the classic "usual" coral color I remember from having SO many lots of it all the way back to 2002. Then there were the odd lots here and there that were dark with rose or brown tones and the ones that had a whole lot of orange in them.
