Default A basic term

What does the term "to strike a color mean?" Just wondering. Thanks in advance.

Striking colors change in the flame and end up not looking like the rod color. There are different ways of striking different colors. Some will strike in the flame, some need to be cooled and then reintroduced to the flame, etc.

When you "strike a color" or sometimes it's called "flame strike" you bring out the actual color of the rod....often it's different than when you got it out of the pack of glass. The other thing to remember about striking colors is that they are quite sensitive to the portion of the flame you use....do a little reading/research and make sure you strike in the right part of the flame or you might just burn the bejezus out of the glass or end up with mud. When in doubt....work in a neutral flame and mid way to out far in the flame...may take longer, but you have better control. That also goes for putting that glass onto the mandrel or the bead.
