Default Copper Pipe Cap Lentil Press ?

I was wandering the hardware store yesterday and got the idea of using Copper Pipe Caps of various sizes to make bead presses out of. I do know not to put the copper in the flame as copper fumes are bad for everything but I am pretty sure pressing hot glass into shape will work OK.

Any other hazards I need to think about?

It's gonna get hot quick, you are gonna have to dunk in water after maybe each use, you may even have to use beeswax. I know that some use copper stubouts for bowl pushes

Cool, I can see me dunking it in my bucket.

The bees wax would be a given. I'll most likely sand and buff the dickens out it with the dremel as well.

I will have to remember the bowl pushes if I ever get to working that big.

You're getting a real tool eye there, Phil.

I made a 'Stump Shaper' out of copper bar stock once, worked really well. Thinner stock like pipe caps should work fine but as pointed out above it'll get hot quick and glass will stick to hot metal. A dunking between presses should solve the issue. Good idea!

Thanks Kristin. I have always been a "scrounge" artist. I love repurposing. I get the biggest kick out hearing "I never would have thought of that".

Any opinions on fuming the copper with gold or silver? would that reduce the likelihood of the glass wanting to stick to the copper? I am assuming a fairly thick coating would be required.

It's not likely to make any difference. As long as the copper isn't hot the glass won't stick. Press and remove quickly and you won't have a problem, cool it down between pressings.
