Default Colors and heat up times? dirty flame?

Do different color glass rods require a different heat up time? i notice clear glass heats up slower and burns when it is glowing red. red rods turn dark almost the instant they hit the flame, and the white/ivory color barely burned at all. i know heating up the rods real slow is the best way to go.

any input???

also, i am waiting on a replacement torch because the one i have seems to cause a dirty flame

here is what happens, when it is on for about 5 minutes it is a nice pretty clean blue flame

after five minutes it turns orange and almost no blue, i am not dropping anything in the torch head at all....any input or ideas?

Aye, different glass has different melting characteristics.

Transparents tend to be stiffer that opaques.

Purple has a reputation for burning out if over heated too long and some is just uncooperative as hell.

Some opaque blues can go to a cooper like smutzy brown.

Devardi glass can be very very shocky.

There are extensive threads here about different colors and some of the unexpected personalities of the glass you can run into.

Read everything you can, be careful and think through "what's the worst that can happen" as you get used to what is happening in the flame.

And play.

Play a lot.

You will be teaching you body how to do three things at once and learning how not to leave it out of the heat too very long while you admire what you have in your hands.

Play Play Play.
