Checking...
Oh yeah, I made a big beautiful lentil bead.
It was over 1 1/4"...
I had the highest hopes...
CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK
CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK
CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK
CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK
CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK
CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK
CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK
CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK
I was warned about the green pearl... oh well...

I haven't had that one check on me yet, but now I think I will go back and take another look at all the stuff I made just to be sure.

Checking and cracking are the same thing. Usually, for me, "checking" refers to the small spider web cracks like in that photo, and "cracking" refers to a big break. But, they mean the same thing.
Green colors are colored with chrome (I believe) and the colorants change the COE of the glass slightly, so when it is used encased it causes checking. A few companies have started to adjust the COE of their green to compensate for it. NS Forest Green is one. Not sure about others.

It's really pretty. Will it survive being checked? I think it's still pretty even with the little cracks.
Oh, and Suzanne... asking why something is called what it is in English is just a waste of time. Who know? is usually the answer!

I had that happen with one of my frit mixes.
I'm pretty sure that the jade was the
culprit. The resulting beads had more
checks than Bank of America on Payday. We had
to go (as they say in Spiderman) "Back to formula" and
start again.

Thanks for the info Chad!
I am going to keep the bead since is is technically broken but the clear on the outside is smooth.
The little cracks are all on the inside, I may make it into a pendant for me

I thought that it might have been a specific sort of cracking, that is why I asked why
( your avater cracks me up)

Try using a very oxydized flame. With some greens, a reduced flame reacts with just the surface of the green, changing the COE on the surface. Then when you encase, you have some new COE sandwiched between 33 COE. Hence, the cracks only inside a specific area of the glass. Hope this helps.

I know it is not a GA color, but GA also recommends an oxidizing flame, not overworking the piece, and keeping the garage times as short as possible. So I guess if you want to work this green (which is a favorite of mine) I guess you need to work fast, use lots of oxy, and make sure you use it toward the end of your session.
