Round Beads
I am fairly new to lampworking and all of my beads tend to be donut shape. Can anyone share their favourite technique to make a round bead? Thanks.

I use Corina Tettinger's shaper first and then my infinite marble mold for larger beads and a bead roller for smaller beads.

Thank you so much for your suggestions! I have just ordered the marble mold. Which of Corrina's molds do you use? Thanks

Ingetraud, I meant to say Corrina's "shaper". I just bought her regular olive shaper. Hvan't used it yet.

A shaper is a helpful tool, but not necessary. The main steps to progress from donut shaped to round are:
1) establish a wider footprint when you first lay the glass down on the mandrel (wider on the mandrel than it is tall/thick on the mandrel)
2) follow the initial footprint with additional wrap(s) of glass right in the middle of the bead
3) melt each wrap in slowly and observe how the bead becomes taller (thicker)
4) take your time and watch what is happening ~ let the glass teach you.
My general rule of thumb is ~ if the footprint is 2 rods wide, the successive wraps of added glass will need to be at least 2, maybe 3 depending on how thick your added wraps are. Hope that helps!

Thank you all. Thank you to Frit Diva for your method. It is always great if you understand the glass first, before using the tools, I think. That was great advice!

Glass wants to be round. Just keep turning the mandrel at a steady rate. I always rotate in the same direction, away from me, unless I am melting in dots.
