Off mandrel tutorial requests wanted
Howdy yall.
Im Mike Marsh, and have been a lampworker for 35 years. I have specialized in off mandrel work done mostly in boro. I have done almost any animal you can think of along with other sculpural work. Almost all my peices can be done in soft glass. And, its time for me to start sharing my knowledge.
I am accepting any request for tutorials at this time simply because I dont know which one to do first.
So dont hesitate to ask.
Thanks,
Mike

I'd actually like some advice or pointers on sculptural work in general. I think boro is very different to work with compared to say, moretti. I have issues just punting up and removing the punty. Not to mention keeping the punty from melting and drooping.

Dragonfly Tutorial coming soon
Well I guess the dragonfly will be the first. I will work on it tonight and see it I can have it ready by tomorrow.
As far as working with boro goes. I find it easier than the soft glass. For one thing, it will withstand heat shock a lot better. Which gives you a lot of leaway while working with it. The trick to punties is to make one side relativily cold and the other side hot. Creating stress so when it cools it breaks easy at the point of contact. Another thing about boro that I like is the ability to control the heat better. Since it takes greater heat to get it to working temp, there is a wider range of temps, and consiquently time to achieve the objective.
I use a plain ole "Victor" welding torch, with tips that range from 1/16 of an inch in dia. to 3" tip. (man that big un will sure eat up the oxy.)
For the soft glass, I have a couple of Nortel minors and a major (red max)

I understand sculptural pieces are easier if made with boro, but I don't have any nor do I have a torch that would melt it. So what do I do? Are your tutorials applicable to soft glass?

Nancy,
So far all my tutorials can be done in either. I have shown examples of both. Thanks
Mike

Yeah Budda! I tell people "I have the body of a God! Budda. " So it would be cool to make Budda beads. Actually these are off mandrel. Hmmmm could you make him on a mandrel? I'l like to learn to make candies too.

Mike that's a great project that you're offering to help people out with sharing the techniques. Well done, that's very admirable.
I'm retired from engraving & kilnformed glass and make enough time to play with some boro on the torch (maj/min). Your philosophy of sharing knowledge is a similar sentiment to mine, in fact I used to tell students that I have nothing to hide, because it would mean more to me if they take an idea or technique and do something better than I could ever dream of.
Can I please ask you why after 35 years in the trade, you still use a welding torch, I mean why you aren't using a GTT or something as equally elaborate?
I think I already know what your answer will be, same as what Eddie told me when he was showing me some stuff, last summer in UK. He is a little older than I am and been in the trade since his apprenticeship, also still using a welding torch with a variety of nozzles. But what a mine of information and dexterity.

Since I took a class from Mike I like boro also. Just have to get my torch set up. He is just amazing with the techniques that he does. He can do so much when I struggle. Ha has me beat by about thirty years or more with the glass. Wonder if this is why. Als would love to see some of the butterflies or humming birds. Thanks

Natty,
Yes I will do one. But I'm running a little behind right now and it will take me a few days to get to it. Too, I have been using a demo version of a web hosting service to post my tuts, and I would like to wait a few days befor I go ahead and get the web hosting service started. I would say by the end of the week it will be up and running. Then there will be a steady stream of tuts coming.
Thanks,
Mike
