Default does Raku colour fade when etched?

I made a large holed disk, and would love to etch it. I really love to dunk glass in etching medium, but I also do not want to loose the colour I achieved with this piece ...

Thanks!

It doesn't really fade, but it does become muted. On second thought, I guess faded would be a good description, so yes.

Try making something small with raku that you are not bothered about then etch that to see if you like it.

I like it etched, but then I also like it not etched. Yes, it is a softer effect. If however you had great color and then lost the color, etching will not bring it back.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the input. The bead came out really nice, and I do not have the energy to polish the inside of the hole. So, it will be etched later today when I get home.

Donna, I cleaned up your picture, I wanted to see more. I hope it is ok?

Anyway, I love it, and will definately etch my disk.
Have a fab weekend! It is summer in Cape Town, and I am gonna have to work with a fan blowing in the shop today.

No, it does not. The color in striking glass is not just on the surface like the metallic finish on reduction glass. This is proved when cold working striking glass and the colors are also inside the glass. It looks softer because it is etched, but the color doesn't "etch off" like reduction glass. I have some raku rocks and they have bands of color all through them. If you have ever seen one of those huge rods of raku from OCR you can see colors are all inside of it.

Kevan is right, I had a couple of little barrel beads that for whatever reason I didn't like so I had them in a bowl with others. I threw the whole lot in an etch bath and the raku colors stayed. They are just a bit muted because the shine is gone but the bright blues and purples were still there.
