Show in Canada - Crossing the border??

I have a question about participating in a show in Canada. Does anyone
know what the requirements/paperwork/legalities are to cross the
border with all of your stuff if you're going to sell there?

Originally, the organizer mentioned he had someone who knew the
procedures and could help, but now he's saying that he might have some
info from a few years ago if he can find it, and could I send him any
of the information I've found??

I'm currently reading a 50 page document called "Convention Services
Program" but a lot of it is geared toward US convention organizers
hosting their convention in Canada. Any help would be appreciated.

I know you dont have to pay duty on "signed" pieces of original artwork.

If your bringing any tools with you, you may get hasseled. Theyll think your either moving up here or comming to teach a class, neither is allowed unless you have your paper work fill out.

I don't know about bringing items up for a show, but I do know that to teach in Canada all that is required is a written letter from the studio or school hosting the teacher. I have talked extensively with Canada Immigration about what is required for us to bring in teachers. They are allowed to teach a class up to 5 days only with a written invitation from the school/studio, after that they must have paper work permission.

From what I've been able to work out on my own, it appears that you have to pre-pay duty and taxes at the border in CASH, on the total amount of your inventory. When you come back across the border, you can apply for a refund of that duty and tax on your unsold inventory. They do not say how long it takes to get the refund.

Plus, from what it looks like, you have to fill out some kind of employment permit in order to sell.

Obviously, this is much much different for teaching a class, as would be expected.

However, I'll need to actually call the frikken border to find out for sure, as my email communication with the canadian officials have been very unhelpful.

Regardless, it sounds cost prohibative. I just don't have that kind of cash to give up front.
