Default 12 NEW Mille Rods at Frantz Art Glass!

Hi everyone

We are still processing all that Mille Cane that Mike brought back from Murano. This is the 5th batch we've released and we have 1 more batch to process and post after this.

Mike is returning to Murano in October. He will be looking at the Mille Rod that is available and perhaps we will get some restocks of popular sold out colors or...NEW colors!

Here is this week's New Mille Rods!

Edit: we just posted the 12th rod-we thought we had 11 new colors-but forgot about one more....White Green Flower-she's a beauty!

After you look at all the photos, we have posted our in-house glass testers description of how he works these rods. Just scroll down past the beads

Here is what Gary says about the process he uses to make these beads.
He winds the glass rod onto the mandrel. compresses the ends inward by using a hand held graphite pad (2"x4"). He continuously turns it and it will appear with a "low glow" and when he pulls it out of the flame and cooling slightly the "imperfections coagulate" and then he heats it again to a bright red then uses a bead press to "squish" the bead and then gives it a "fire polish".

He has a fairly large gather, about the size of a large marble. imagine it as a rather oblong shape with a twists of color stacked before he "squishes"

He also says that each rod has differing colors that strike uniquely, so he will "play with it" and try to bring different colors up. He says he mostly lets the "rod tell him what to do" depending on how it's reacting.

Gary loves to do flameworking, but specializes in cat beads mostly that he makes for his own enjoyment (big time cat lover). Gary works in our warehouse and will test many products for us. We also use outside bead testers to validate what he makes.

Some of these mille rods do have problems as far as being shocky (extra large diameter mostly). Some of the purples will have the EDP effect, some of the pinks as well. But we show these beads as they come out, imperfections and all.

It's really surprising how some of those turn out. Thanks for the information on how they are made. I can see why Mike was excited

how do you get the interior color to come out? when you apply the glass the exterior color is what makes the exterior of the bead, smooshing the ends into the bead, don't quite get what you mean. thanks

Default Suggestion for mille

Hi Mike,

I went to look at all the milles available at Frantz.com but all I could see on the mille page were the swirly beads that have been made from them. My main interest is to see the photo of the cross-section of the rods. Can you please make a composite photo with both the bead and the cross-section and replace those thumbnails? This way, both sets of people - those who want to see the cross sections and those who want to see the swirly beads, can see what will help them buy the rods they are looking for without having to page through item by item.

Thanks!

Bett

Hi Bett

If you would like to see the bead and the rod (cross section) we do provide that important information. You are correct-it is a needed piece of info.

If you click on the item (the swirly bead you like) it will open to the description of the item.

If you scroll down past the verbiage, we do include the combo photo with the bead and the rod end so you can really see exactly what you will be getting.

Have a lovey day

I think, hope, that I have successfully ordered some of each. Looks like lots of fun to play with.

Default mille rod test swirrly beads

i tested some of the mille rods trying to duplicate the swirly beads. this is what i got. in order not just to get the outer layer of the mille on the outside of the bead i twisted the whole rod as i applied small piles of the twisted rod along the mandrel later smoothing it all out. I encased each bead except the red one. I will post more later.
