Ancient stone
I need to make a bead that looks like stone so I can add an ancient symbol/rune on it. What glass or technique do you recommend?

Enamel or frit? Perhaps silver leaf over a solid too, swirl a little. There are some nice faux granite finishes you can get with enamel mixes, and someone in a thread here showed how clear glass frit can also do that. Also some of the earthy blends. Intense black stringer for webbing. I suppose lots of ways! It would be an interesting experiment

And baking soda beads have that etched, rough texture.

Ivory + silver foil, dredged in baking soda.

I'd use a grey, and then enamel. Black or dk grey enamel on grey is pretty.
Depends on what kind of stone you're talking about. A well used stone is smooth. River rock is smooth. Runes are usually handled a lot and they are smooth as well. Etc and so forth.
I'd etch it for sure. But not if you use silvered ivory or silver fuming. The etch will skew the silvered color. I fumed ivory to a nice brown and etching it reduced it to white again.

I've made a nice faux granite by making the base in light ivory, roll in intense black #1, white #1 and then clear #1, melt in.
