Mirage Set up
Hey Gals and Guys,
I've been using a Lynx for a couple years now and just recently upgraded to a Mirage, however (inc noob ?'s) i dont know exactly how to set up the gas lines with the 4 studs. i understand that the second set of studs can be used for a foot pedal, but if i'm not gonna use one, can i just use a "Y" adapter to bring the lines down to one line, then connect to the regulator.
and for my 2nd noob question, can the Mirage (or even the Lynx) be used with natural gas?
(emailed GTT but i'm still waiting to hear and found these forums while looking for the answers to those questions, but still couldnt find the answers anywhere
Thanks for your time
Jason

You need two sets of hoses. I suggest that you buy a spit hose set for the foot pedal. Use a coupler to hook the hoses together until you get a foot pedal. But at any rate you'll need to hook up hoses to all four studs. The front studs are for the lynx and the back studs and for the outer fire. The Y is connected to the flash back arrester which is connected to the regulator.
You can use Natural gas but you will need a large Gas Booster Like the G-tec 30 or bigger. the 15 won't run the mirage well.

just add a Y at the end of each oxy and propane hose (near your bench) and attach to the torch posts. If you do the Y at the torch, you'll need less hose than if you did it at the flashback arrester at the regulator.

* Most foot pedals tend to have similar hose setups:
A) Oxygen
1) A long hose runs from your oxygen tank to the pedal.
2) A short hose runs from the pedal to the center fire oxygen intake on the torch.
3) Another short hose runs from the pedal to the outer fire oxygen intake on the torch.
(it does make a difference which short hose goes to the center fire and to the outer fire)
B) Gas
1) A long hose runs from your propane tank to the pedal.
2) A short hose runs from the pedal to the center fire gas intake on the torch.
3) Another short hose runs from the pedal to the outer fire gas intake on the torch.
(it does make a difference which short hose goes to the center fire and to the outer fire)
If you install flashback arrestors at the torch (vs. at the regulator), I would suggest putting them between the pedal and the torch. This means 2 gas flashback arrestors and 2 oxygen flashback arrestors.
* If you choose not to install a foot pedal (you can always add one later):
A) Oxygen
1) Connect a short hose to the inner flame oxygen inlet at the torch
2) Connect another short hose to the outer flame oxygen inlet at the torch
3) Connect these two hoses to a Y adapter
4) Connect a long hose from the Y adapter to your oxygen tank
B) Gas
1) Connect a short hose to the inner flame gas inlet at the torch
2) Connect another short hose to the outer flame gas inlet at the torch
3) Connect these two hoses to a Y adapter
4) Connect a long hose from the Y adapter to your propane tank
In this case, I don't see a problem using just one set of flashback arrestors (1 gas and 1 oxygen) between the Y adapters and the tanks.

It's easy to make your own Ys for a 4-stud torch. All you need to make your own:
two short lengths of fuel hose (one for the front fuel stud, one for the back)
two short lengths of oxygen hose (one for the front oxygen stud, one for the back)
you can just cut these short lengths for your existing lines, if you want to.
two nylon 1/4" barbed T or Y fittings (available at the hardware store)
eight hose clamps - you can use the screw worm style, or you can use the kind that you crimp on. Fire marshalls like the crimps better than the screw clamps.
If you want to use the centerfire (the Lynx part) on a concentrator and the outerfire on tanked oxygen, Y the fuel posts together, but leave the oxygen posts unwyed.
