Default E-forming solution/ needing to filter

Can someone please tell me how thick of a layer of carbon I need to filter my electroforming solution?
I bought activated carbon. Is this what I needed?
Should I rinse it with distilled water first, then put it in a new coffee filter to pour my solution through?
Can I let it dry and use it again or do I need to pitch it?

Anyone who knows, please?

Melinda

Hi Melinda,
I'm new to this, but Janelle Zorko suggested just a tablespoon or so. If activated carbonis the stuff you use in fish tanks, it's the right stuff.
Why would you rinse it first? I never thought of that. And I never thought of reusing it either. I'll be interested in hearing more from folks in the know.

Uh-oh! I just pour mine from the beaker into a funnel with 2 coffee filters and back into the bottle it came in. I guess that's not right, huh?

Thank you, Roberta and Kimberly.

I was reading Kate's tips and she mentioned rinsed charcoal, towards the bottom of the page: http://www.katefowle.com/tips.htm

I think I am going to get the book that she has on her site.

I see it now. I do prewet the coffee filters with dH2O to minimize volume loss.
