Default Marbles on a cricket

How big of a marble can I expect to make on a cricket with 2 five lpm concentrators? Is 1.5 inch to big of an undertaking?

Not enough heat for 1.5 inch diameter marble IMO.

It is also important to use the right tool for the right job! IMO there are better torch choices for making 1.5 inch marbles. i.e. the Scorpion, etc.

I think I've come close to 2" on mine. I do prefer the cricket with oxygen so tend to wait til I'm in Rockland, Maine, at my favorite studio, Playing With Fire, to work on marbles. At home, I am on 2 oxy-cons and don't have any trouble working with boro.

I used to have your setup and not talking heroics I'd say around 1 to 1 1/4.

Sounds like an excercise for you to try. I have made 2.3+ on my Lynx no problem. I am betting you could do 2+ if you have the skill and patience.

El cheapie marble mold shows up tomorrow then hopefully I will try it out soon. Couple days left of class then I will have a little time.

I tried a huge jellyfish the other day but wasn't real happy with the colors due to haze on the ruby. It was probably an inch and a half by three.

I understand going on the cheap to start but as soon as you can afford a marble mold upgrade, I HIGHLY recommend this:

I originally started this thread and I've copied/pasted it more times than I can count. It is worth the read.

I realize it will be harder, but I couldn't afford an infinity yet. I read that thread a while ago and plan on getting one if I decide to do more marbles. This time I chose glass instead.

I made a one and three eights inch marble tonight. It took about an hour and a half. Not to bad I guess for my first. I will see if it survived in the morning.

If all goes well I am trying for a lynx to get a little better.

Did it survive? We'd love to see a pic!

No such luck on surviving. Should have fired the kiln, but was unsure how it would turn out. Next time the kiln will be on.

Next one should be a little easier, that's if my scorpion ever shows up.

I am liking making them though, time to invest in some better molds.

Save your pennies for an Infinite Rim mold. Really, really nice.

Thats a nice round looking marble. Nice tools are great, but they don't take the place of caring and taking the time.

P.S. You will love the infinite rim though

If you forget to turn your kiln on and have a thick fiber blanket handy you can place the finished marble on one side and then fold over the other side so that it's sandwiched in between. This will slow the cooling down so the marble doesn't crack. I've done this with numerous test marbles I didn't plan to keep or sell and they are fine. If I decide I want to keep one I toss it in the kiln and run it up while I'm working on something else so it gets proper annealing.

I should make the obligatory note that fiber blankets aren't really that healthy to have around, very dusty.

I have an apothecary jar filled with vermiculite on my bench just for such emergencies. I've cooled COE 104 marbles that size in it. But, you can't get anxious, leave it in overnight, just like Schrodinger's Cat if you look at it its dead.

I did fiber blanket it. I probably didn't cool it in the flame long enough to get an even heat base though. Once I had some nasty bubbles I couldn't get out of it I kinda gave up. It was a toss up between the blanket and water for me at that point for me.

It was nice and round though.

I did a color sample for the next tryName: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1368204203.387508.jpg
