BTW, I thought that was yellow, not orange. I guess part of my learning will be... what colors the glass becomes 'cause it's not always what it starts out as.

Laura, I want to second the kudos about your beads designs! I love your use of colour and form. Once shaping becomes second nature to you you will take the lampwork bead world by storm! I'm glad you've found the tips here helpful. I also loved seeing the photos! Yay LE. -H.

I know that this is quite an old thread, but I've only just discovered it. I would like to add my thanks for the wonderful instructions and tips given here. Just what I needed!

Good job.
Nothing like taking suggestions and running with it.

Hey! I just had to say thanks for the tips and pics too, since I have always been mystified on how to make barrels/bicones without pointy ends.
One thing that has helped me with using a marver and rolling a bead on it, is Tettinger's tip in PTF to start rolling the bead before it hits the marver, not after it is touching the marver. That helps me from getting flat spots.
Thanks!

Not sure if someone mentioned this earlier in the thread, but another common problem is that people try to marver when the glass is still too hot, or press too hard when the glass is hot. When you take the glass out of the flame, particularly if you've done the trick where you tilt the mandrel and let the hot glass run down over the pointy end of the bead, wait a tiny bit to let the glass firm up a little before starting to marver. Then begin rolling before you touch the bead to the marver. (I first heard that tip in a Smircich class.) The hotter the glass, the less pressure you want to use on the marver.
If it works better for you to hold the mandrel and move the paddle to marver, rather than rolling the bead on a stationary marver, do that. People do it both ways.
