Default Striking...

Is there a trick to this?

In particular, I was playing around with a lovely clear yellow bullseye rod, and I came out with a beautiful red grapefruity coloured bead.

I tried to recreate this... and had some difficulty.
First one I think I may have overworked--it was very dark when it went into the kiln... like black or something.

2nd one I took my time, and when I got the perfect bead shape, the colour was CLEAR. I waited a second until it cooled, thinking maybe it'd change in the process, but it didn't. I put it back in the flame, and THEN started to see the red...in splotches...

*huff*
How did I get it perfect the first time around accidentally??
I didn't realize there was a trick to striking...

One thing i have discovered in striking Moretti is you have to let it cool. Especially with some of the pinks. Let it cool until you think it's going to break, then flash it in the flame until it gets a soft glow. You should see the color change.

I usually get the best results when I don't "try" to get anything...reverse psychology. Not sure if it's on the glass or myself, but if I try to aceive a certain effect, I get nada.

I hold the bead under the table where it is dark to see when the bead has lost all glow. Then strike. The splotches probably were due to the bead still having some hot spots.

How do I do that though?
Once it's in it's CLEAR colour, I let it cool down, and then just flash it to get the colour i know it should be?
Or do I get it glowing and soft again?

Well, it will help with some things - it's not real specific on striking. Hope it helps

It did help!
I'm trying to strike BE orange/red.
The site said that if it looks almost black, it struck RIGHT.
I'll have to see what it comes out as.
Hmph.

Well, the good thing is that if you can get it do it right, then you are ready to start working with boro. Seriously though, I have played with striking softglass, and Lynn and Artwhim are right on with their advice.

The more heating and cooling you do the better when striking. Just keep heating and cooling and it will strike for you. The longer you work the better.
