I highly recommend checking temps too - my straight from the factory kiln was over 150 degrees off.

That's quite a bit! So what did you do? Do you just adjust the temp or calibrate it somehow?

They sent me a new circuit board for the controller, and that got it closer, but it's still about degrees off. At that point, I said screw it and just adjusted it.
I have a whole long thread about using Van Gogh glass that led to the discovery.

We have found that the controllers are consistently accurate. In fact they are more accurate than the portable pyrometers. When the temperature is off, it is usually the thermocouple.

I did also get a new thermocouple. I don't really remember what got it closer - I just know it never got completely fixed, so I just adjusted.
ETA - I went and found my thread about it - I had two thermocouples in addition to the new controller.

Calibrate a kiln using Ceramic Cones. Ceramic Cone #022 can be used to calibrate your kiln or check it for accuracy. 022 bends at 1087 F. Look this up on the net for more info on how to use them to calibrate your kiln. Glass Alchemy has a page on it too. Also when the kiln is cool it should be set to room temperature not 0. As this can effect the pyrometer.
This can also be done by using a suspended rod of glass if you know the bending point of that particular glass. It should be pretty close to accurate.
Ceramic cones are the most accurate.

Or you can coat a piece of glass with carbon. Carbon burns off at around 1050 F. Which is the annealing temp for boro. I always coat my piece to make sure it reached annealing temperature.
